As a young and ambitious factory draughtsman, Vic meets and romances beautiful typist Ingrid Rothwell (Joanne Whalley). All his plans for the future are ruined when Ingrid falls pregnant and the couple have to move in with her parents. Disillusioned and deeply unhappy, Vic seizes on the chance to escape down south to a better job. In London, he meets actress Donna Pennyman (Susan Penhaligon) and begins a passionate affair, but she too is destined to shatter his life…
