Spike Lee's best film in years, SUMMER OF SAM is a rich dissection of permissive, blue collar life in 1977 New York. Its Italian-American focus is something of a departure for Lee, but the authenticity of the evocation is as impressive as anything in Scorcese's cannon. The serial killer story is little more than a platform for a heady exploration of sexual promiscuity, disco and urban tension, but the film is none the worse for that. SAM is up there with the great New York movies. < less
