Film Description

A selection of promotional films made by Stanley Russell, industrial film maker, for Scottish engineering companies.

Features Men of Iron (c. 1947): an overview of iron propellor manufacture at the Blair Foundry of Andrew Strang & Co, Hurlford in Ayrshire. Strangs was a name to be conjured with, a firm with very distinctive products, and its success was dependent upon the skill of an experienced and committed workforce.

A Romance of Engineering (1938) was made for screening at the 1938 Empire
Exhibition, and shows the production of steel components at William Beardmore & Co’s Parkhead Forge. Production of many items including turbine and diesel engine parts, and railway axles is shown.

James Watt (1959) is a film about the life and work of the inventor of steam engines, James Watt. It explains the history of the early principles of steam.

Story of a Steel Wire Rope (1946) is an illustration of the manufacture of Martin Black & Company’s wire ropes, highlighting all the processes involved in production and testing.
