Film Description
Perfectly paced and performed, Kids Return details the friendship between two delinquent high school slackers who get mixed up in smalltime boxing and the local Yakuza gang. The usual deadpan Kitano humour, sharp observation and quirky visual coups of Japan's pre-eminent filmmaker are much in evidence.

Kitano¹s first film independently produced and distributed by his own company is perhaps his most autobiographical to date, and certainly his most underrated. Masuru and Shinji are two delinquent teenage slackers who pass their days by cutting classes, playing pranks on teachers and extorting money from fellow students. A fateful encounter with a young boxer leads to Shinji, the quiet one, learning to box at the local gym, whilst the loudmouthed Masuru mixes with the local Yakuza gang, leading to a parting of the ways for the two friends. An insider¹s understanding of smalltime boxing and the ways of the Yakuza is married with the usual deadpan Kitano humour, sharp observation and quirky visual coups that have become the uniquely recognisable trademarks of Japan¹s pre-eminent filmmaker. Very funny, very enjoyable and long overdue on video. CJ < less
