Film Description

Donald Sutherland stars in this 1984 film based on the novel by Agatha Christie. Dr Arthur Calgary (Sutherland) returns home from an expedition and goes looking for a hitchhiker whom he gave a lift to two years previously in order to return the man's address book. He discovers the man has been executed for his mother's murder and, furthermore, the address book which he is returning could have proved his innocence. Who then is the real murderer?

Ordeal by Innocence was Agatha Christie's favourite among her novels, and this adaptation is one of the better entries in the long line of films drawn from the Queen of Crime's novels. Donald Sutherland features as Dr Arthur Calgary, a scientist who has returned from a two-year expedition in the Antarctic. When he attempts to return an address book to a man he once gave a lift to, he discovers that the man he has been hanged for murder and that the address book provided his only alibi. With a motivation of guilt, Calgary opts to expose the truth, and begins investigating into the victim's family's secrets. A reliable cast includes Faye Dunaway, Ian McShane and Christopher Plummer, and another plus is a jazz score from Dave Brubeck. < less
