The UK DVD premiere of an influential (but hard-to-see) movie, Odds Against Tomorrow. The film was mentioned by no less than Jean-Pierre Melville as being a key influence on his work. David Burke (Ed Begley, always on the nail with compromised characters) is a former cop disgraced for refusing to co-operate with state crime investigators. He conceives a plan for an elaborate bank heist, approaching Earl Slater (the ever-dependable Robert Ryan), a racist, psychotic ex-con, and Johnny Ingram (Harry Belafonte), a black nightclub entertainer, with the prospect of a big haul if they join him. The conflict involved in planning the robbery is counterpointed by the antagonism between the two men. A striking item from the varied (but always interesting) career of director Robert Wise. < less
