This film catches the fun as well as the madness and does a great job of capturing the sheer inventiveness of Thompson’s mixture of fact and fiction. It also captures perfectly the feelings that we had about him, reading his Rolling Stone articles in London in the early 70s, and it highlights just as well the resonance between then and now: the USA has been stolen by the rich and powerful.

Hunter warned us just what was happening 40 years ago. He single-handedly tried to get an honest man in the White House and succeeded. That wasn’t enough to beat the system but he gave everything, he made a difference and his light still shines.

Film Description

Johnny Depp narrates this life and times of the late 'gonzo' journalist Hunter S. Thompson. As well-known for his drug-taking and copious alcohol consumption as he was for his savage counter-culture commentary, Thompson remains an icon of the American underground. The film includes clips of home movies, audiotapes and passages from unpublished manuscripts from Thompson's heyday, the decade between 1965 and 1975.
