This is a film for people who love cinema. Opening with director/star Nanni Moretti whizzing around Rome and its environs on his Vespa and finishing with an ironic toast to good health, this quirky and highly original film plays with the conventions of cinema to produce a witty and refreshing comedy that won the Best Director award at Cannes.

In his film, Moretti visits the site where Pasolini was killed in Ostia, he wreaks a fantasy revenge on a critic who wrote a favourable review of Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer (a film that Moretti despises) and he also goes island-hopping with a soap opera-obsessed friend.

In Italy Moretti is held in the same regard as Woody Allen, yet it was not until Dear Diary was released twenty years into his career that he received much international attention. Allen’s influence is evident in the film, particularly during the hilarious fantasy interludes, but Moretti stamps his own identity on the film with some imaginative and daring set pieces; indeed, the hilarious scene with Jennifer Beals of Flashdance fame is one of the best celebrity cameos in cinema.

Film Description
