Since the brilliant City of God, many Latin American films have dramatised the harsh and volatile realities of shanty town life, but La Zona is something quite different and deserves credit for its fresh interpretation of a well-trodden topic. Far more cerebral in nature, it unsettles not for its explicit brutality but for its unflinching reflection on the disturbing consequences of societal divisons and the paranoia this feeds.

When the comfortable lives of wealthy Mexican citizens living behind security fencing are infiltrated by three criminals who rob and murder a neighbour, rational behaviour and the rule of law give way to an impulse to protect their artificial lives, with terrifying results. Two criminals are shot dead by guards, but a third, a young boy, escapes and hides within the confines of the community. Taking the law into their own hands, the citizens mount a merciless manhunt that ends with a shocking climax. This satirical thriller is an exploration of vigilante justice against the vulnerable and unfamiliar, which although extreme, is unsettlingly plausible.

Film Description

Social drama set in a privileged gated community in central Mexico City. La Zona, despite its affluence, is surrounded by miles of slums where people live in abject poverty. One night, three men from the slums break into the compound and, in the bungled robbery that follows, an old woman is killed. Her housemaid alerts the security guards, who kill two of the men; the third, a sixteen-year-old boy named Miguel (Maribel Verdu), manages to escape and hides out in the basement of an apartment belonging to the family of teenager Alejandro (Daniel Tovar). Alejandro, who has hitherto been primarily preoccupied with planning his birthday party, forms an uneasy alliance with Miguel - causing both boys to question the value systems on which their lives are based.
