In 'Saturday Night Fever' (1978), Tony (Travolta) is a Brooklyn roughneck stuck in a dead-end job as a salesman in a paint shop, who lives for Saturday night down at the disco, where his stylish dancing has made him something of a local hero. But Tony wants more than his small world can offer. Through the influence of Stephanie (Karen Gorney) - his more sophisticated dance partner - and Tony's brother - a disillusioned priest - Tony starts to question and think about the possibilities for change. The Bee Gees provide the thumping '70s disco soundtrack.
The screen version of 'Grease' (1978), based on the successful retro stage musical, became an instant hit around the globe, cementing John Travolta's star status and ensuring the show's revival in numerous incarnations up until the present day. After their summer romance ends, Danny (Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) are unexpectedly reunited at high school when the latter moves to Danny's town. However, their relationship stalls when it becomes apparent that Sandy is not 'cool' enough to date gang leader Danny. Hit songs include 'You're the One That I Want' and 'Greased Lightning'.
In 'Urban Cowboy' (1980), Travolta plays Bud Davis, a country boy freshly arrived in the big city who takes to spending his evenings in Gilley's Bar, where he meets cowgirl Sissy (Debra Winger). The pair soon marry, but their connubial bliss is shattered when Bud sees Sissy being taught to ride a mechanical bull by Wes Hightower (Scott Glenn). When Gilley's announces a bull riding contest, Bud signs himself up, hoping that a victory will help him patch things up with Sissy.
In the legal drama 'A Civil Action' (1999), Travolta stars as Jan Schlichtmann, a cynical personal injury attorney more concerned with personal profit than justice. Despite his reputation for only taking on big-money cases which he can settle out of court, Schlichtmann agrees to take on the case of Anne Anderson (Kathleen Quinlan), a mother whose child was diagnosed with leukaemia after a local well was contaminated. Schlichtmann faces a battle merely to get the case to court, with the factory lawyers using all of their corporate might to manipulate the legal system to their advantage.
In 'The General's Daughter' (1999), Warrant Officer Paul Brenner (John Travolta) is given just 36 hours to investigate after the raped and murdered body of Captain Elisabeth Campbell (Leslie Stefanson) is discovered at Fort McCallum. Teaming up with his ex-girlfriend, army rape counsellor Sarah Sunhill (Madeleine Stowe), Brenner determines to discover exactly what is going on at the army base, no matter whose toes he has to step on. But as he gets closer to the truth, it becomes clear that certain parties will do everything in their power to protect their secret.
