Film Description

In a film based on Ben Jonson's Volpone, Rex Harrison stars as international playboy Cecil Fox, who decides to pretend he’s dying in order to find out what his three old flames will do. He summons them all to his bedside, and they come gladly, thinking of the fortune he will leave behind: Princess Dominique (Capucine), fading movie star Merle McGill (Edie Adams) and Texas millionairess Mrs Sheridan (Susan Hayward). To assist him in his scheme, Fox hires William McFly (Cliff Robertson), a gigolo and sometime actor to act as his secretary/servant. As Fox and McFly act out the charade, things take an unexpected turn from comical farce to full blown murder mystery as one of the contenders is found dead.

Joseph Mankiewicz was one of the most civilised directors in the history of the cinema, with his literate, witty screenplays gracing most of the films he made. This UK DVD premiere makes available one of his most difficult-to-see films, with Rex Harrison starring as an international playboy who decides to pretend he is dying to test out his old flames. Based on the play by Ben Johnson, it is not perhaps vintage Mankiewicz, but sports many of his most cherished skills. There are other rarities in the latest batch of from Optimum Releasing, notably the powerful drama Joe (with a remarkable cast including a young Susan Sarandon and Peter Boyle) as well as the of DVD premiere of the late Otto Preminger film about a terrorist group, Rosebud, starring Peter O'Toole and Richard Attenborough. < less
