Film Description

Schlesinger's first feature, adapted from the novel by Stan Barstow by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall. Set in an industrial Lancashire town, this is the bittersweet tale of a young draughtsman who falls for the typist working in the same factory, gets her pregnant and is trapped into marriage. Despite the circumstances, they try to find a way of living together, working their way towards 'a kind of loving'.

Sharply observed in documentary style and with plenty of salty northern dialogue.
