Film Description
Vincente Minnelli's classic musical stars his future wife, Judy Garland, as a young St. Louis girl in love with the boy next door. Set in St Louis at the turn of the century, this is a valentine to the charms of American idealism, echoed by a superlative score, which includes such classics as The Boy Next Door, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and the old favourite The Trolley Song with all its merry clang-clangs and ding-dings!

One of the great musicals, Minnelli's visually stunning, captivating turn of the century tale of a St Louis family remains as fresh and vital as the day it was made. The use of colour, costume and setting is beautifully integrated with the musical numbers (Garland excels, especially in 'The Boy Next Door' and 'The Trolley Song', whilst the dance routine 'Skip to My Lou' and the Yuletide favourite 'Have Yourself A Merry Christmas' make up an unforgettable quartet of songs), and there is a warmth, depth and charm to the characterisations that remains irresistable. Set in St.Louis at the turn of the Century, this is a valentine to the charms of American idealism. A wholesome family struggle with the progress of civilisation, symbolised by the 1904 World’s Fair in St.Louis. Director Vincente Minnelli keeps it all bright and breezy, whilst paying loving attention to every rich emotional shift or physical detail. This celebration of Americana is echoed by a superlative score, which includes such classics as ‘The Boy Next Door’, ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ and my personal favourite ‘The Trolley Song’ with all its merry clang-clangs and ding-dings! Of course, one must not forget a wonderful cast led by the unforgettable Judy Garland. RT.
