Quite possibly the best British film of the 90s, and arguably Mike Leigh’s
best film to date, Naked is one of those divisive movies that people either get and love or completely loathe. It opens with an ugly rape scene in a Manchester back street that propels the character of Johnny – a career best from David Thewlis – to London and the house of an old girlfriend where he basically mooches about, winding people up, spreading poison and flailing, kindly and desperate, for meaning. Johnny is frequently unpleasant and cruel and yet, somehow, Thewlis manages to retain the sympathy of the viewer. It’s a fierce, unmissable 125 minutes guaranteed to stay with you a long, long time.

Film Description

Mike Leigh’s controversial epic stars David Thewlis as a deeply frustrated idealist. Disappointed with the material world at the end of the last century, and the impending millennial apocalypse, Johnny is aggressive and confrontational, but also eloquent, sexy and charming. He flees Manchester for London where he inflicts cynicism and despair on all those he meets.

David Thewlis turns in a magnificent, snarling performance in this film that is by turns hilarious, terrifying and thought-provoking. Winner of Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.
