Film Description

Old Kurdish musician Mamo has been given permission to perform a concert in Iraqi Kurdistan, taking his old friend Kako as bus driver. Mamo travels to his destination through Iranian Kurdistan picking up his ten musical sons along the way. Mamo is convinced that the essence of the upcoming festival is that voice is a weapon. Hesho is chosen to join the group but since women are forbidden to sing in front of men in public, Hesho must be carefully concealed on the bus. A majestic landscape and a sense of premonition pervade a journey informed by experiences of oppression, adventure and the transcendent power of music, and set against the backdrop of Saddam Hussein's fall from power.

Written and directed by Bahman Ghobadi, the award-winning Kurdish Iranian director of Turtles Can Fly and A Time For Drunken Horses, and selected as one of the 'New Crowned Hope' film series, Half Moon - like many of Ghobadi's films - celebrates the hope and humour of existence despite the harrowing circumstances of war that gives the context to his films.
