“This film won't be worth a moment's reflection,” Lars Von Trier explains over the film’s opening. “It's a comedy, and harmless as such. No preaching or swaying of opinion. Just a cosy time.”

Von Trier’s first Danish-language feature film since The Idiots is, somewhat unexpectedly, an office comedy. Ravn, the genial owner of an IT company, invents a fictional American-based boss to make all the tough decisions. When he decides to sell up, Ravn hires an out-of-work actor to pose as ‘the boss of it all’ and break the bad news to his neurotic employees in person. Observant and absurdist in equal measure, the film was shot entirely in Automavision, a technique where the camera angles and lighting are chosen by a computer. This gives the film a disconnected, even abstract feel, somewhere between an episode of The Office and a Dilbert cartoon. Fans of either of the above are bound to enjoy Von Trier’s most accessible film to date. < less
