Film Description
Writer Hanif Kureishi boldly tackles issues of racism, bigotry, sexuality, violence and politics in early 1980s Britain, yet still manages to be compassionate, humorous and entertaining in this low-budget drama from Channel 4 that was a surprise hit at the box office.
Set in the Asian community of London, Omar inherits a laundrette which he transforms into a palace complete with space invaders. Complications arise however when he employs childhood friend and ex-NF member Johnny, who becomes his lover as well as partner, arousing the anger of Johnny's former gang accomplices.
