Film Description

Jeannie (Brenda Blethyn) once faced a promising career as a stand-up comic but threw it all away when she moved to Australia to marry a one-hit wonder country singer. Now, he husband has left her with two kids, one of whom is mentally challenged. She comes to rely on her other son to look after his sick sibling, and to drive her around local gigs as she attempts her comeback. But complications arise when he meets girl worth standing up to his mother for.

Director Cherie Nowlan stages the ensuing family fracas in the style of bittersweet comedies like Muriel's Wedding and Life is Sweet, and fans of Blethyn's work with Mike Leigh will appreciate the film's warm, imqrovisatory feel.
