Film Description

Released for the first time in the UK, Oshima's companion piece to Naked Youth reveals the struggle to survive amidst the poverty and decay of 1950s Japan. Unflinching in its portrayal of slum life, the film achieves a garish aesthetic that is both repulsive and mesmerising. The film's title represents the symbolic end of the Japanese Empire, and the film's themes reflect Oshima's protest against the US military occupation of Japan and the subsequent loss of national, cultural and spiritual identity.
