In the final part of his comprehensive overview of terrestrial life, David Attenborough’s latest wildlife series investigates the natural history of amphibians and reptiles, animals he describes as ‘lethally fast, spectacularly beautiful, surprisingly affectionate and extremely sophisticated’.
As we have come to expect, the series uses the very latest in filming technology – ultra-high-speed, thermal, miniature and on-board cameras included – to reveal the secrets of a hidden world, and to present us with previously unseen behaviour, from jousting horned chameleons to sumo-wrestling scarlet frogs. After each main programme, a 10-minute Under The Skinfeature, produced in collaboration with the Open University, follows Attenborough as he examines the technology that enabled his team to bring this incredible animal behaviour to the screen.
Having now given a series to every group of animals, Attenborough has said that Life in Cold Blood will be his last. ‘I hope that if people watch it in 50 years’ time, it will still have something to say about the world we live in,’ he says. It surely will.

Episodes include:The Cold Blooded Truth, which studies the keys to reptiles' and amphibians' success, looking at thermoregulation, parental care and life cycles; Invaders of the Land, which looks at the world of amphibians; Dragons of the Dry, whihc looks as the world of lizards; Sophisticated Serpents, which looks at the most modern reptiles, the snakes, exploring how they have managed to become so successful; Armoured Giants, which looks at the most ancient of the reptiles: the crocodiles and turtles.
