The Good EarthSidney Franklin, 1937 Film DescriptionAn epic Hollywood adaptation of Pearl S. Buck's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Good Earth follows the struggles of humble farmer Wang Lung and his wife, former slave, O-Lan. They struggle to get, and then retain a piece of land, ownership of which makes the difference between self-determination and near-slavery. Location shooting in China blends with footage shot in the US and the great cinematographer Karl Freund won an Oscar for the photography, which includes an impressively staged locust plague. Luise Rainer also won an Oscar, for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Producer Irving Thalberg, known for combining literary prestige with commercial success, died during the production, and the film is dedicated to him.
