Agatha Christie plot line meets European farce with bite. Ozon does it so well and for those of us who like French actresses this is a dream. He chose his cast well and he gives them space to act as they do best. Danielle Darieux has over 70 years of screen experience, Catherine Deneuve nearly 50, even the youngest Ludivine Sagnier has over 10 years. Which one do you like best? Huppert's extraordinary transformation? Huppert getting seriously menacing? Beart's saucy french maid? Can anyone compete with Fanny Ardant's vivacious beauty? Can she really still look this good? Older women seem to be getting younger these days - which brings us to Catherine Deneuve. She really is still dangerous. But it is the combination of all eight which makes the film. There they are, confined in the house with one dead husband and eight motives. Tensions rise and truths emerge, all perfectly paced to the shocking denoument. Topped off with superb design in both set and costumes 8 Women is a must see for relaxed, but not brainless, summer viewing. < less
