Heroes is the quintessence of all the virtues of a modern American television series. It’s not just that they exert more effort than we do (and spend a quite a bit more money), it’s that this effort is both more structured and more useful.
Heroes creator Tim Kring claims never to have read many comics so you won’t find too many similarities with pantheon superhero movies (Spider-Man, X-Menet al). The plot bears keen similarity to Alan Moore’s
peerless graphic novel Watchman however, which is no bad thing. Clearly great minds think alike.
Around the world (though especially in America), ordinary people find
that they are developing strange powers – invincibility, flight, telekinesis. A strange force is intertwining their fates and some dream of an imminent apocalypse that they must stop.
Hero origin stories are always the most fun and this is no exception. Most episodes beat the recent superhero movies hands down in terms of intelligence and sheer enjoyment. So far so good if you’re a fan of this type of thing. The good news is the writing and execution is good enough to entrance those who aren’t.
The complete first season of the phenomenally well-received hit TV show. A group of ordinary people discover they are not so ordinary after all, and must wrestle with an assortment of superpowers which may prove to be not so much a blessing as a curse. Gripping, well written, and not a spandex jumpsuit nor a cape in sight.
