MovieMail's Review
Johnny Depp's eccentric embodiment of Jack Sparrow - an extraordinary, swaggering mélange of Keith Richards, a drunken sailor and his own inventiveness - is one of the most daring and successful performances to feature in a family film, and it's back with a vengeance in this enjoyable sequel to 2003’s surprise critical and commercial hit.
From the start the sequel ups the action quota, with an exciting set piece in which Jack and Will scramble for a treasure chest whilst hurtling downhill in a waterwheel. Dead Man's Chest also recaptures the sinister feel of the original, with the appearance of the ghost ship a particularly ghoulish highlight.
But it is in the sheer volume of humour that this film really scores, with imaginative sight gags (an array of characters based around sealife) and exuberant performances. This high-spirited swashbuckler will tide audiences over nicely before the grand finale (At World's End), due next summer.
Johnny Depp's incredible Jack Sparrow returns for another jaunt in the Caribbean, with some great comic set pieces and marvellous make-up effects, not least on Bill Nighy's part-sea monster part-man creation, Davy Jones. Super family fun.
