Film Description

A series of engravings from 1731 about a prostitute by British artist William Hogarth is the inspiration behind Channel 4's historical drama, which follows the facts of Hogarth's life and the subject of his first major series of engravings, The Harlot's Progress, which shows the life and death of a 22-year old prostitute in 18th century London. His series of engravings lifted the lid on 18th-century vice and established his enduring reputation as both a remarkable social satirist and one of the greatest British artists of his day. Using the clues that Hogarth left in his engravings, the drama pieces together Hogarth's story, suggesting that the prostitute was a real person, and that Hogarth actually knew her.
