Pushkin love-story-gone-wrong, filmed in England and St. Petersburg. A concerted effort by the Fiennes family. Good period drama, if a trifle tedious here and there. The cinematography is terrific. Gleaming ripples on a lake, grasses moving in the breeze, rooms bathed in rose-pink light, and the subtle beauty of light and shade dappled nature. Particularly effective set-pieces are the black of carriage and horses against a stark white snowy landscape, a painting-like skating scene, and the grey rain-whipped jetty of the duel. JJ. < less
