Fail Safe (Lumet, 1964)

Film Description

Made less than two years after the Cuban Missile Crisis, Fail-Safe was eclipsed by the success of Dr. Strangelove, released the same year. Lumet's apocalyptic drama shares the same plot as Kubrick's black comedy: a bomber is mistakenly sent to attack Russia, and the US president (Henry Fonda) must co-operate with the Russians to avoid catastrophe. But in a twist not even Strangelove would have contemplated, New York is offered as a sacrificial lamb to avert Red retaliation.
