MovieMail's Review

This winningly lo-fi, low budget, low gloss, independent American gem is misleading at first. Misleading in that the sparse cinematography, ultra-naturalistic dialogue (umm, errs and 'I don't knows' abound) and un-showy acting initially lead you to believe that the film is completely meaningless. But, much like meeting new people for the first time, give it a little longer and affection grows while misapprehensions dissipate.
Funny Ha Ha gives us a slice of life of one summer with Marnie – 23 years old, in just-out-of-college limbo and trying to adapt to looming adulthood. She tries to steer away from slackerdom by changing jobs, pursuing romance with her friend Alex and making lists of useful things to do – "Spend more time outdoors; Fitness Initiative!!". First time director Andrew Bujalski has been feted by critics as a new Woody Allen, focussed as he is on characters and relationships. And while the dialogue is a million miles away, the fondness felt for Marnie resembles that found in an Allen film – high praise indeed. Finally, Funny Ha Ha is only meaninglessness if life is meaningless.
