Orchestra Seats is a romantic comedy done right - unlike the saccharine romcoms of Richard Curtis, this lovely ensemble piece gives us flawed (and therefore more empathetic) characters awkwardly negotiating their love lives alongside their hopes and aspirations.
The central character is Jessica (Cécile de France, last seen as a psychotic lesbian in Switchblade Romance), a charming gamine whose infectious good nature touches three separate storylines – a soap star desperate to be taken seriously as an actress, a pianist who wants to break free of the concert circuit, and a businessman forced into auctioning his beloved art collection.
The supporting turns are the undoubted highlight of the film – veteran actress Dani is a joy as a soon-to-retire concierge who unexpectedly nabs the film's most moving moment, and Valérie Lemercier won a César as the vainglorious yet insecure actress with her fervent dissection of the passions of Simone de Beauvoir to a dubious American director (Sydney Pollack) wonderful to behold. Great fun and full of charm. Gorgeous shots of Paris too.

She finds a job as a waitress in bar next to a theatre, where her life crosses those of a pianist, a famous actress who wonders if her work has value or meaning and an art collector preparing to sell off his collection. She hears their stories and nurses their neuroses.
