MovieMail's Review

Enjoying a welcome re-release (thanks no doubt to the success of his most recent movie, Heading South), director Laurent Cantet's Human Resources is an offbeat gem. Franck (Jalil Lespert) returns home to take up a job in the local factory as a management trainee, the same factory that has employed his father (the wonderfully lugubrious Jean-Claude Vallod) and his sister for years. There is intrigue in the factory with the management and the unions tussling over the introduction of a 35-hour week.
Much of the pleasure to be had in watching Human Resources comes from the subtle, shifting tensions and discomforts between father and son. Combining a touch of Hardy's 'Return of the Native' with Ken Loach's ear for industrial verisimilitude, Human Resources is understated, with little in the way of directorial flourishes or star turns, but this understatement in no way diminishes the quietly persuasive force of the film, fostering a quiet truth in the vein of a Truffaut (rather than the out and out didacticism of a Godard).

Film Description

The deeply personal story of a father-son relationship that is tested when their opposing attitudes toward work and life collide head on. Frank is a business school student who has returned from France for a summer apprenticeship at a factory where his father is a long-time employee. At first, Frank's energy impresses the bosses and makes his father proud, but when he discovers that executives are using him to bypass negotiations with the union, thereby jeopardizing his father's job, Frank is left feeling betrayed. Non-professional actors in the cast give the film a documentary-like feel, adding poignancy to the story.
