Film Description
A commercial and critical smash, Unforgiven both reinvigorated the Western and Eastwood's career. Clint Eastwood sat on the excellent Unforgiven script (by David Webb Peoples) for ten years. Whether he was waiting to get old enough to play the lead, or waiting for the inevitable respect that Hollywood showers on a true veteran, isn't clear.Unforgiven nonetheless proved that his sense of timing was impeccable. A Oscar-winning, commercial and critical hit, the film both reinvigorated the Western and Eastwood's career. For the first time, his gunman hero (William Munny) is a flawed and ageing human being with a family and a sense of regret; avenging the mutilation of a prostitute for a cash reward only serves to revive his demons - namely violence and alcoholism. Some say the ending is dubious, but Unforgiven is still a masterpiece of politically correct cinema. And,w ith one of the strongest, late-middle aged casts of recent years (Richard Harris, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman) giving support, it is also the crowning moment (both as director and actor) of Eastwood's later career. < less
