God only knows what George Bernard Shaw would make of this musical version of his ‘Pygmalion’ story, but praise must go to Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe for maintaining the cynical and distinctly unromantic spirit of Shaw’s original. Directed by the legendary George Cukor, this film is a triumph in nearly every department, hence it’s multi-Oscar winning status. Rex Harrison is absolute perfection as the cantankerous and insensitive Harold Higgins, perfectly matched by Audrey Hepburn’s charming turn as Eliza Doolittle, making the difficult transition form Cockney flower girl to elegant lady with more skill than critics often give her credit for (although she does seem more comfortable in her finery than a face covered in dirt). Beautiful costumes, excellent production design, a top-notch score and a clutch of strong supporting performances, this is a witty and vibrant musical to treasure. RT. < less
