Absolutely outstanding performance by Tim Spall. His portrayal of detachment and removal of emotion for such a feeling individual is perhaps the best I have seen on film. His reaction to seeing his long term friend in the condemned cell was so realisitic and moving. His eventual realisation of the futility of capital punishment, particularly whilst amongst the crowd of protesters, was staggeringly acted.

The film brings to life the normality of the day - the pub sing-songs, the acceptance of duty and the moral standards that were prevalent.

Also reflected is the outrage of the public where serious crimes are committed in the "hand 'em high" attitudes that were rife yet the inability to accept that someone in their midst has to carry out the wishes of the courts.

Tim should be nominated (and should win) the best actor in the next BAFTA awards. < less
