Curb Your Enthusiasm is a witty and clever comedy about the life and times of a somewhat misanthropic an often misunderstood Larry David. Life in sunny California seems easy but in the eyes of David there are many hurdles to get past. Misunderstandings and errors in etiquette are central to the theme and David often gets it all wrong, leaving a trail of enemies or disappointed people behind him.
With a reality and often hand-held feel, one follows the life of David, who has become very rich from making the succesful series 'Seinfeld' and who has a lot of time and money to play with. Notable cameo appearances by the likes of Alanis Morrisette, Hugh Heffner and Dustin Hoffman, to name but a few, are always very convincing and work very well with the Jewish humor. In every episode a few storylines run simultaneously, woven together very smartly. There is a lot of improvisation and no doubt many different takes to wade through in the editing room.
Per series there is a general storyline. In series 1, it's about the build up towards a live show that David has planned to do, in series 2, David is planning to make a sitcom, first with Jason Alexander and when that fails (for tedious reasons) he pitches the same show to Julia Louise-Dreyfuss, whose patience he also tests. In series 3, David gets involved in opening a restaurant, in series 4, Mel Brooks wants David for his stage show of The Producers. Series 5 has a slightly looser plot, with the main theme being Richard Lewis' kidney failure and David's dilemma of offering a kidney.
Thankfully, at this time, David is working on series 6, as much as he hates writing episodes, he has agreed to another series. And I am one of the many fans eagerly anticipating another 5 hours of pure genius. < less
