Tracy Heart (Cate Blanchett) is a recovering drug addict who lives with her mother and brother in Sydney. After four drug-free years she is struggling to start a new life by opening her own business in Sydney. However, due to her troubled past Tracy's efforts are thwarted at every turn as she, the "little fish" of the title, has to make her way up into Sydney's blue collar society. She must also deal with potentially detrimental people from her past, such as her drug-addicted stepfather.

Little Fish is a drama that effectively presents contemporary society's plagues. Director Rowan Woods achieves pure realism by filming in unusual but authentic Sydney locations, as well as presenting characters who show the true effects of drug abuse.

The acting is outstanding (both Weaving and Blanchett won Australian Oscars for their excellent work) and the progression of the plot is constantly engaging. Regardless of the circumstances of its flawed characters, the film above all stresses the importance of giving people a second chance.
