The allure of the exotic is movingly but critically dissected in this striking film in which three unfulfilled women (Charlotte Rampling, Karen Young and Louise Portal) travel to 1970s Haiti to spend time with the handsome young men of the island, who they regularly pay for sex. They are unashamed of their pursuit of happiness, but matters are complicated when one falls in love with Legba (talented newcomer Ménothy Cesar), who has complex secrets of his own.
The film's treatment of the women is very interesting - they are at once sympathetic and insensitive. The taboo of middle-aged women actually enjoying sex has tarnished their lives in their home countries, and their liberation on this tropical island is moving. However, they are ignorant of the political upheavals during the Baby Doc era, and barely contemplate the problems facing Legba. Lush photography beautifully captures their escapism, and the performances are uniformly strong, with Rampling as arresting as ever, and Young outstanding in her portrayal of a desperately lonely romantic.
