At last a film that proves we do not have to drown in syrup every time we watch a British romantic comedy. This sharp ensemble piece eschews Richard Curtis-style schmaltz in favour of a sharp, improvised script from many of Britain's top comedians. Stars from a host of popular sitcoms play three couples who are competing for a dream house in a hunt to find Britain's most original wedding. On the big day there will be three ceremonies, consisting of a tennis match, a nudist service and a musical number. All three are masterminded by a pair of camp wedding planners who, surprisingly, steal many of the film's best scenes.

Although the couples are slightly heightened for comic effect, all the characters are recognisable, from especially Alison Steadman's intrepidly tiresome mother-in-law, ever on-hand to deliver an unhelpful criticism when the wedding stress kicks in. The weddings themselves are an undoubted highlight, each one funny, touching and imaginative, and although an acidic undercurrent flows throughout, this emerges as an endearing celebration of love that won’t have you reaching for the sick bucket.
