Film Description

The debut film from the director of Cinema Paradiso, very different in tone from his later work. Gazzara stars as the titular gangster, so nicknamed because of his previous medical studies, who rises to the top of the Neapolitan mafia with the aid of his sister. Tornatore is ruthless in his depiction of politicians, who are as corrupt as the gangsters. The story is based on the real life mafia mastermind Raffaele Cutolo, who during the 1970s and 80s orchestrated the brutal business of the Naples crime gangs. Gazzara is brilliant in the lead, instigating murder and corruption as casually as one would order breakfast.
