More adventures from the wonderful new series of Doctor Who, with David Tennant excelling as the time-traveller, recalling the eccentricity of series favourite Tom Baker. Billie Piper continues to impress as his feisty companion.

2005 saw the triumphant return of Doctor Who with The Doctor taking the form of the nicely unhinged Christopher Eccleston. Written by Russell T. Davies (Casanova, Queer as Folk), the new series remained endearingly English with its rubbery aliens and modest special effects while still providing some scary and moving moments throughout. This was largely due to the chemistry between The Doctor and his new companion, Rose (Billy Piper). In fact Piper’s wide-eyed performance, often during the more emotive scenes, was key to the shows success.
Eccleston’s decision to leave led to The Doctor’s regeneration in the 2005 Christmas episode. The jewel in the BBC schedules, the episode saw the marvellously wiry David Tennant become the 10th Doctor Who, confounding the bemused Rose and saving the planet Arthur Dent–style in his dressing gown and slippers. His excellent turns in Casanova, Blackpool and Harry Potter have already made him a household name and his flamboyant performance adds a touch more Tom Baker to his google-eyed Doctor. Tennant and Piper seem a perfect fit, and the new series, which promises the return of the dreaded Cybermen, also promises to go from strength to strength. < less
