It's now impossible to watch this battle of the sexes without admiring the audacity of the running in-joke about Rock Hudson's inclinations. However, the key to the comedy in 1959 was the irony that an independent career girl still went weaker at the knees over some old-fashioned chivalry than she did over equal opportunity banter down a party line. Doris Day excelled at portraying such spirited singles and she found the perfect foil in Hudson, whose self-deprecating charm and wry amusement at his situation contrasted splendidly with the uptight anxiety of his wealthy rival, Tony Randall. The split-screen gags may no longer aerate or titillate, but they retain a sense of sexual hesitancy that romantic comedy has long since lost. < less
