Ken Russell's 'Gothic' is a phantasmagoric spectacle of horror set at Lord Byron's Swiss villa in 1816 when a coming together of some of the most imaginative minds of the Romantic era created the literary ideas of Frankenstein and the Vampire.
Byron(Gabriel Byrne)Dr. John William Polidori (Christopher Spall) and the Shelley's (Natasha Richardson and Julien Sands)join together along with Byron groupie Clare Clairmont (Mryiam Cyr)for an orgy of Laudinum induced free love, nightmares, flashbacks and gory predictions including Shelley's cremation on a lonely beach.
Russell could go to town and have fun with the marvellous imagery which ranges from the subtle to the downright silly. All the old gothic cliches are there, skulls, rats, cobwebs, leeches, cockroaches and terrified women rushing around like banshees.
A short film, the director condensing everything he has to say into 83 minutes which keeps the tension at the right level-any longer and the horror may have turned to laughter. < less
