Film Description

Aka Konkurs. Forman's assured semi-documentary first feature about different kinds of competitions is considered to be the film that launched the Czech New Wave. Originally made as two separate featurettes, the style and themes of both were similar and so they were released as one film. Clearly showing the beginnings of Forman's style and pre-occupations (faces, music, gentleness, shrewdness), it also has a political undertow. The film also the marked the debut of famous cinematographer Miroslav Ondricek (Amadeus).
