As with Boogie Nights, we're in the sleazy underbelly of 80s Hollywood – this time, it’s not a John Holmes surrogate, but the real thing, the ill-fated porn star here persuasively incarnated by Val Kilmer, an actor who alternates truly maladroit performances with razor-sharp portrayals like this. Cox deals with the bloody Wonderland drug killings, in which Holmes, washed up as an adult movie performer, may have taken part. The fascinating milieu is atmospherically recreated by Cox, and there a strong supporting cast including Lisa Kudrow as Holmes' wife. < less
