Film Description
Film director and widower Aoyama feels lonely and in need of love. To find the ideal woman, he holds an audition and chooses the attractive but enigmatic Asami. While he is looking for romance, she has rather different plans for the relationship. A disturbing film that will leave you reeling.

Lets say you're a lonely widow. Time has passed and your son's pressuring you to meet someone new. Being a producer has advantages - just hold an Audition for a non-existent film plenty of women will no doubt show and you can take your pick.
This is the opening premise for Takashi Miike's excellent, shocking and highly memorable first western release.
The film works admirably well, due in no small part to the pacing. It starts at a measured pace, everything's normal, you relax. It transpires that he's dragging your brain and trains of thought into his clutches so he can run riot in the final reel with full attention and engagement. Accentuating the violence is Lynch-esque confusion of reality, dreams and fantasy. It becomes so thoroughly overwhelming that I walked out of the cinema feeling like I'd been hit over the head with a shovel. Don't be mistaken into thinking that this is a brainless shocker - it's an intelligent film whose themes become apparent once you've got your head together.

Viva 'audition'! Finally someone has made a well crafted, yet no less disturbing HORROR film the way they are supposed to be made..Despite the first hour being quite slow and meandering like most arthouse fare, the last hour or so will even keep the most retarded exploitation fan rivetted and mindblown

Several years after the death of his wife, company executive Aoyama is invited to sit in on auditions for an actress. Leafing through the resumés in advance, his eye is caught by Asami, a striking young woman with ballet training. On the day of the audition, she's the last person they see. Aoyama is hooked. He notes her number from her file, calls her and takes her to dinner where they seem to really connect. He hesitates to call again, worried that he'll seem too eager. When he does, Asami knowingly lets the phone ring for some time before answering. She's alone in her darkened room - or is she. From this deceptively simple premise a taut psychological thriller leaps out of the screen at you, comparisons can do an injustice to both parties, but to say that this is "Misery" directed by David Cronenberg will certainly give you some idea of what you are in for!
