Mike Takashi's highly individual (and very violent) trilogy quickly establishes itself as one of the most accomplished sequences in an overcrowded (and frankly exhausted) genre. With ruthless economy, the director details the blood-boltered gang battles for control of the notorious Shinjuku district. When the Dragon Claw gang from Taiwan attempts to hijack the dope, extortion and gay prostitution rackets run by the local Japanese Yakuza, a lone cop predicts the bloodshed that lies ahead. And in Rainy Dog, the handling of violent confrontation is truly kinetic. Unsurprising, given that the director is also responsible for the highly unusual Audition. The plotting, of course is fairly rudimentary, lacking the sophistication of many Western contributions to the genre.
