The Pollock film was for me disappointing. I had read Naifeh and Smith's
book on which it was based and to which it was faithful -almost too much
so, at the expense of creative interpretation of what made Pollock tick.
There is plenty of suggestive material in the book that a gifted
scriptwriter might have followed up, as with Jackson's "invention" of the
drip, which was not his and did not happen as was shown in the film. The man
who should have been credited with this was Hans Hofman, who taught Pollock
how to do it in his studio - this was fine, and is an example of what might
have been made to happen elsewhere in the film.
I wanted more exploration of Pollock, the man as well as the artist, in
answer to such questions as why he strove mightily and then blew his
achievement just when it came to be recognised. Yes, of course he was an
alcoholic, and yes, he was upset by Namuth's filming (the reason why he was
upset was cleverly suggested.) Much as I liked Ed Harris, his performance
was
in a sense too clear cut, failing to suggest the mystery at the heart of the
man - and his stunningly original art.
On the other hand, the actress who played Lee Krasner was
simply marvellous, and the actual painting sequences I though worked really
well.
