Chronicling the true historical origins of Islam, THE MESSAGE (aka Mohammed, Messenger Of God) is an epic in every sense of the word, having taken six years to prepare and over one year to film. Perhaps better known as the Executive Producer of the Halloween series of films, director Moustapha Akkad (Lion Of The Desert) actually shot two versions of the film simultaneously (one in English and one in Arabic) on location, using two actors for each of the major roles. The better-known English version stars Anthony Quinn, Irene Papas and Michael Ansara < less

There are many misconceptions about where the Islamic religion comes from and this is a film to put all of these to rest. This is the film for muslims, as Jesus of
Nazareth is for Christians. For people of all religions this film is a stunning majestic drama with the great
Anthony Quinn taking a leading part.
Set in the 7th Century against a backdrop of wonderful scenary it brings the revelations of the Quran to life.
I would advise anyone to settle down with plenty of food and drink whilst watching this film. I know I found it very hard to tear myself away from this amazing story, about the transformation of Mecca from a land filled with slavery and debauchary to one of peace and tranquility!
This film cleverly shows the life of the Prophet Mohammad without even once showing his face, serving to make it a more dramatic and thought provoking movie. You feel for this Prophet and the turbulant struggles he overcame to spread the glorious word of God.
If more films made to this standard were readily available, then maybe the world would be a better place.

Historical parallels with the ascendancy of Christianity are emphasised throughout - a persecuted minority emerging victorious, an examination of the nature of religious toleration, freedom won for slaves, women (and even camels!). Widescreen desert vistas and epic battles also make this an impressive visual spectacle. < less
