People may argue about what the greatest contribution to particular genres are, but few would deny that the greatest musical of all time is the glorious SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, directed with tremendous panache by its star Gene Kelly and the definitive director of musicals, Stanley Donen. While we all revel in Kelly splashing about in that gutter to Conrad Salinger's arrangement of the title song, there isn't one facet of this movie which isn't top drawer -- and it‘s salutary to think that this was one of the last gasps of the great musicals. This two-disc DVD edition is truly a deluxe affair, with two massive documentaries, a deleted song, scoring sessions and hordes of other goodies. Absolutely and totally unmissable. < less

Set in the period when films were making the transition from silent to talking pictures. Gene Kelly shines as the silent movie star who falls in love with Debbie Reynolds’ struggling actress. Comic relief is provided by Donald O’Connor (watch him running up the wall) and also Jean Hagen, the beautiful silent screen actress, with the not so beautiful voice.
The film includes such musical favourites as ‘Make em Laugh’, and the famous, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, which even now never fails to delight.
The films ability to poke fun at the film industry and its variety of characters and plot mishaps ensure that this picture is not just your regular romantic musical.

If this all time classic musical isn't in your list of favourite movies then you obviously haven't seen it! Kelly splashes elegantly through rainswept studio streets in the famous title number, there are spot on, hilarious parodies of the Hollywood transition from silent to sound (and the problems encountered by the less than sweetly voiced Hagen in a very funny portrait of a spoilt actress), O'Connor's brilliant 'Make Em Laugh' routine and the delightful Debbie Reynolds. The greatest screen musical of them all. < less

This still remains one of the most beloved motion pictures of all time. It may be most fondly remembered for Gene Kelly’s legendary rain-soaked song and dance to the title tune, but praise must also be reserved for Comden and Green’s dynamite screenplay. The story is a witty parody of the movie industry during the difficult period in which the industry was making the transition form silent film to ‘talkies’. A trio of charming and funny performances from the leads helps the humour and romance take flight, but for me, no one can equal the brilliance of Jean Hagen as Lina Lamont, the blonde bombshell with the impossibly squeaky voice. This is a comic performance that never ceases to amuse. Overall, a perfect slice of Hollywood entertainment and a gentle poke at its own silly nature. RT. < less

In idle moments I have sometimes pondered on the film buff's equivalent to Desert Island Discs. If I was cast away on a solitary rock equipped only with a state of the art cinema for my personal use which films would I take with me. It strikes me that whether on a desert island or not we all need cheering up sometimes and the film which for me carries the maximum level of sheer uplift is the wonderful 'Singin' in the Rain'. For a short period in the 1950's Arthur Freed's musicals unit at MGM could do no wrong, releasing a consistent stream of stylish, tuneful musical spectaculars. But even amongst these 'Singin' in the Rain' is exceptional. It certaintly has the memorable songs you would expect and there are impressive high energy dance numbers, including Donald O'Connor's exuberant "Make 'em Laugh" and, of course, Gene Kelly's much copied dance through a rain soaked studio street scene. To add to that, directors Kelly and Stanley Donen make the camera dance with the performers and Harold Rossen's cinematography makes full use of the sumptuous hues of technicolor. What some people forget, however, is just how funny this film is. It has the sharpest dialogue. Above all else this film is designed to lift your spirits and send you sailing out of your chair. If it fails, you must have been nailed to the floor! < less
