In roles they may have been born to play, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon excel as Oscar and Felix, two mismatched New York friends forced to live together after Felix is thrown out by his wife. Oscar is a wisecracking slob; Felix is prissy and anal retentive. The dialogue, by Neil Simon sparkles, especially when it comes from Matthau, here reprising his role from the 1965 Broadway original: "Everything you do irritates me. And when you're not here, everything I know you're going to do irritates me." Lemmon and Matthau worked together sporadically over the next 30 years (culminating in 1998's 'Odd Couple 2), but this remains perhaps their definitive pairing. < less
