A road movie with a difference, this Oscar-nominated Brazilian film, directed by Walter Salles, has won many hearts. Dora, a crusty middle-aged spinster, unwillingly becomes responsible for a small boy, Josue, when his mother is killed. The film charts the adventures and disappointments of this odd couple as they search Brazil for Josue's long-lost father. Marilia Pera is stunning as the cynical, worldly letter writer who has spent a lifetime spent extorting money from illiterate travellers passing through Rio de Janeiro’s Central Station. She perhaps finds a heart by the end of the film. However, for me the film’s real strength derives from its depiction of the life and landscapes in this vast, vibrant country. < less
